Tignes, France - ski resort review
Tignes is a small town situated in the vicinity of the Grande Motte glacier offering plenty of great skiing opportunities. Together with the nearby resort Val d'Isere, it forms the enormous Espace Killy - a mecca for experts and an ideal place for adventurous intermediates - that's exactly what attracts tourists. Unlike the other winter oases, Tignes takes pride in appreciably higher, more convenient and favourable for intermediate terrain, with easier access to the Grande Motte glacier. The position of Tignes indicates that snow is guaranteed here throughout the whole season.
As for the transport organisation, much has been improved. The road through Tignes-le-Lac was pushed underground a couple of years ago, so tourists no longer have to struggle with traffic jams to get from the western slopes to the eastern ones. In turn, the underground car parks are another promising development that seems to be finalised soon. Various buildings are getting a facelift to make the town slightly easier on the eye. It all gives a really pleasant view.
Just a quick glance on this small Alpine resort will make us sure that it is a place abounding in a huge amount of terrain for all standards. It is relatively young and designed with skiers in mind. The area has 140 slopes, accessed by 99 ski lifts, which is more than enough for all abilities. Tignes is one of the best worldwide localities with lift-served off-slope runs. It also has swift access to Val-d'Isere slopes. Unfortunately, many of them happen to be closed due to heavy snowfalls. A good area to scope with a guide is off the Tommeuses chair at a section called Vallee Perdue (literally: Lost Valley).
Turning into nightlife activities, worth recommending is the Wobbly Rabbit - a popular joint that will certainly keep you busy until early morning. A huge variety of other night clubs is also at hand.
Apart from the typical winter sports, the resort has much to offer among such attractions as ice diving, hang-gliding, helicopter rides, ice climbing or ice skating. There is also a cinema, a bowling and a nice range of restaurants and bars all to make everyone equally happy.
Finding a place to stay should not be a problem as there is a lot of accommodation possibilities (even close to the slopes!).
Despite its bleak and lack of woodland runs, Tignes is still almost perfect place to stay in with a nice atmosphere for skiing. Worth visiting without any doubt!
