Skiing in Alpe d`Huez

To many people Alpe D'Huez is more known as the most difficult climb of the Tour de France. Yet for the people whose passion is ski and snowboard, there is much to discover in this location. The pistes usually open on the first of December and close - 30th of April. The resort is situated on the massif of the Grandes Rousses, with exclusively south exposure. According to meteorological data the sunny days in this resort are on average 300 per year - so, don't worry about acquiring attractive suntan - just don't forget the sun-cream, you will need it!

The complex which Alpe D'Huez is part of covers 240 km ski runs, and about 3000 ha skiable territory. The denivelation amounts to the stunning 2210 metres! This is not all - the amazing discoveries are still to come: the longest ski run in the world -16 km is situated in this resort. It is called "Pistes de Sarenne", it passes through the Sarenne Glacier. There you will have the ultimate pleasure to ski for one hour and a half without taking any mechanical vehicles. This is due to the very well-organized network of connected ski runs.
The avalanche risk in Alpe D'Huez is one of the lowest in all European resorts - which, by itself is a good attestation - everybody should take care of their personal safety first.

The exact altitudes are as follows: Huez village: at 1450 m; Alpe D'Huez Station: 1860 m and the closest peak - Pic Blanc is a three-thousand one - 3300 m.
The village has 1700 residents, and the accommodation base is 32000 beds.

The resort is situated in the French region Rhone-Alpes. The closest big cities with international airports are Lyon (at 163 km) and Grenoble (220 km). It is also a five-hour drive from Paris.

Alpe D'Huez resort has been developed since 1936, not only as a ski resort but as all-year round sports and cultural tourist site.

In the resort there is a very suitable place for holding seminars or meetings of large groups of people - that is Le Palais de Congres - with its various indoor sport facilities, two cinemas, halls and many possibilities for entertainment, it can reassure the visitors of the resort will have good time even in case the weather does not allow outside activities.

Even though the resort is not very big, it has active cultural life - le Centre Notre Dame de Nieges is an interesting church, finished in 2002, where every Thursday organ concerts are held. Sometimes the world famous organist Jean-Paul Imbert plays at those concerts. The resort also has a museum. This winter it is going to host the exhibition "Huez - Alpe D'Huez - from a mountain village to one of the international ski resorts" with memorabilia, demonstration of various customs, how animals were tended.

The airport of Alpe D'Huez is named after Henri Giraud, pioneer aviator, who worked in the field of mountain rescue by planes and helicopters. The airport authorities offer panoramic flights and aviation school. Also helicopter connections to closest big airports are available.

The alimentation services can please even the pickiest tastes - there are expensive restaurants, traditional cuisine, restaurants "of altitude", also fast food restaurants. However, the places which create the most fascinating atmosphere are the creperies and the gaufreries (for pancakes, gouffrettes and other sweet specialties). Among the other recreational activities, Alpe D'Huez offers you curling, hockey, ice-skating, trampoline jumping, swimming pool, paragliding, horse-riding, hiking and night-skiing.
