Sights and activities near Chamonix
Arguably the most famous French alpine resort, Chamonix lies at the foot of the highest mount in Europe, the majestic Mont Blanc, reaching the astonishing 4807 m of altitude. Both, traditional and modern, the village of Chamonix offers a singular touch of divinity with views from up in the sky and best skiing conditions for all.

Just 8 km down in the valley is nestling the charming Savoyard village of Argentiere. Its lovely name ("argent" meaning "silver") perfectly suits the silver-white vision of snowy peaks and majestic slopes all around. The village shelters visitors within its traditional atmosphere with a lot of cosy cafes, bars and local cuisine restaurants. High in the mountains perfect skiing conditions are available for all level skiers. Here, near the village of Argentiere, just 7 km away from Chamonix, in the heart of the Mont Blanc Massif is located the fabulous high-mountain skiing area of Les Grands Montets. The site encompasses the Chamonix valley as well as the huge Argentiere Glacier with its varied and challenging runs. Reaching the altitude of 3300 m, les Grands Montets offer solid snow cover and a long-lasting snow season. The bravest could try the challenging right off the top piste or enjoy the vast off-piste terrain. The overall vertical decent stands at 2 km.

Enthusiastic climbers or curious explorers, you will be tempted to conquer the Mont Blanc, Europe's highest, or at least get as close as you can to its majestic silhouette. Guided excursions from Chamonix and the neighbor resorts will take you within hand-reach to Europe's white giant. If not for climbing, splendid views will take your breath up there - over snowy rocks and cloudy verticals, above the glaciers in France, Italy, Switzeland and even beyond!

High altitude skiers could not dream of better - they have it all in Chamonix Mont Blanc. Still, intermediate and beginner snow-lovers would be delighted to visit the village of Megeve, a charming rustic serenity just a bit down the slopes. About 80 cattle and hay-making farms are located in the resort surroundings to add a relaxing touch of comforting simplicity. Enjoy the gentle slopes to practice and improve in skiing as well as snowboarding! Meanwhile another attraction will entertain you - in winter the farmers bring their horses and sleighs in town for competitions and various festivals.

A necklace of mountain pearls is ready to charm you near the Chamonix Valley. The "Portes du Soleil" (or "gates of the sun") is the lovely name for an ensemble of about a dozen small alpine resorts located at just 2 hours drive from Geneva. With access to 650 km of groomed pistes, immense off-piste terrain and serviced by 212 lifts, Les portes du Soleil represent one of the largest skiing areas in Europe. Best known centers of the resort area are Morzine and Avoriaz. Morzine is an old mining village transformed into a charming mountain resort with slope-lying hotels and alpine chalets. Together with Avoriaz, set on the nearby plateau, it has been a top skiing spot in the French Alps since its boom in the late 60-s.

Close to Chamonix, just across the Swiss border, is situated one of the most prestigious Swiss resorts - Verbier. At 1 500 m above sea level, Verbier offers some of the best views in the world, attracting multitudes of tourists. Despite the huge visitors influx, Verbier has kept its charming mountain spirit of serenity and untouched beauty. 400 km of ski runs and large off-piste terrain guarantee best skiing and boarding conditions. Verbier is really immense - infinite skiable slopes, boarding terrain, hiking trails, modern lift system and a lot of entertainment, luxury hotels and fashionables clubs and bars. It really has it all!
