Serre Chevalier is one of the most significant and remarkable among tbe French ski resorts. Situated in the south part of the Alps, near the national park Parc National des Ecrins, it offers you an enormous ski area of 250 km of slopes and runs. The weather here is just perfect – with the stunning 300 days of sunshine a year. The resort consists of a biggish city, Briançon, and a few villages (Chantemerle, La Salle Les Alpes, Monêtier) and the closest international airports to Serre Chevalier are Turin in Italy and Grenoble in France. One
of the most remarkable things concerning Serre Chevalier proves to be the scattered forests around the slopes. The variety is wonderful; trees cover around tow thirds of the way up the mountains. It also has pretty good snow and clearings are also available.
Serre Chevalier people boast they have preserved their cultural identity and habits. It is up to you to find out! They also consider that Serre Chevalier is not only a resort – it’s the feeling you will experience while being on a sunny path, savouring a good dish, or just walking around and socializing with the hospitable locals. In the village there is an interesting museum of history and the development of industry. Every week the people from the resort organize a “Skiing Fair”, where the latest trends in skiing and ski clothing and equipment are displayed. The event is worth seeing for all those interested in skiing.
The ski runs are all facing north. They are for all levels of aptitude – from beginners to advanced skiers. The altitude of the pistes is between 1200 and 2800 m. Although the slopes are north, the valley faces the south. Nearby there is a network of 13 villages, some of them modern, while others traditional and in an old style, with preserved atmosphere and cozy Alpine buildings.
During the summer Serre Chevalier is also a very interesting place. It turns into an attractive centre for kayaking, hiking, extreme cycling, mountain biking, normal climbing, rock climbing, sledding, paragliding and overall enjoying one of the most gorgeous mountain ranges in Europe.
