Les Gets
Les Gets is situated between Lake Geneva and Mont-Blanc at an altitude of 1200m and is one of many towns and villages that form the Portes du Soleil, an enormous linked ski area that reaches the French border with Switzerland above Lac Léman. Les Gets became a popular ski resort after the construction of its first skilift in 1936. The traditional dairy-farm village is a community that dates back to the 12th century. The village is a pleasant mix of old Savoyard chalets and modern wooden-and-stone buildings constructed in keeping with their traditional alpine surroundings. This is a family resort with a quiet atmosphere and good links into the Portes du Soleil. People here respect traditions, guarantee a warm welcome and ensure quality service day and night for the tourists. Les Gets is about as nice a ski village as you are likely to find. There's plenty to occupy you along the two main streets. "Les Gets" came from the local dialect words "gitte" and "giette" meaning the corridors used to send logs down the hillside.

Les Gets is one of the best parts of the famous Portes du Soleil, there are plentiful snow cannons as well. In general, the snow is excellent here. Les Gets and its bigger neighbour Morzine share one of the best ski region in the Portes du Soleil. Les Gets is really a charming village for skiers and there are spectacular views of the Mont Blanc Massif. Most of the slopes are on the north-facing side. The skiing shelves conveniently go down both sides of the valley and are separated by a short walk across the village.

Together with other resorts such as Avoriaz or Chatel, it shares 650km of pistes. Les Gets is well situated for beginners and early intermediates with good nursery slopes. The gondola runs to La Chavannes where there's another lovely beginner's area in good snow. Intermediates have large cruising runs from La Ranfolly and from Le Pleney down to Morzine. The other side of the resort – the slopes of Mont-Chéry – is good for the more advanced. Experts will find good steep slopes over the back of Mont-Chéry and off-piste opportunities on Chamossière (2000m). Borders have access to a snowpark on Mont-Chéry. There are 2 quarter-pipes and freestyle riding on Mont Chéry, as well. The Mont Chéry side is connected to the other mountains thanks to a recently constructed piste that runs through the village.

Every French ski resort has it's 'Ecole du Ski Français' (ESF), and Les Gets is no exception; however, Les Gets also have the benefit of a British ski school, which are not found so easily.

Les Gets has invested heavily in six new and modern seater chairlifts, 5 new lifts built in the last few years. The village has 12,000 beds, mostly in apartments. There are enough hotels to give accommodation of those who prefer them. The church with its tower, the old style farm-houses, and tree lined slopes make an attractive alpine picture in Les Gets. The village has expanded to encompass the winter sports market, good shops and neat restaurants. Although the village is little bit scattered, most of the facilities are comfortably close to the main lift station. Les Gets has an outdoor ice rink, fitness center and a reasonably active nightlife.
