Flaine, known as the 'White Desert' for its excellent snow is situated in one of the biggest ski and snowboard areas in France, simply named 'Le Grand Massif'. Flaine is one of the easiest ski resort to reach by car, just 40 miles from Geneve plus an easy 17 mile climb from Cluses. At its modest altitude of 1600m with 133 pistes all connected, the resort is blessed with one of the best snow records in the French Alps. This ski village has virtually guaranteed snow cover from December until after Easter. Whether you’re snowboarding or
skiing, or you prefer freeride, freestyle or carving, you can enjoy your favourite snowsport in a magnificent setting.
There is skiing for most in Flaine, although the resort enjoys a particular reputation as a beginner's paradise. The north-facing runs are very reliable: package companies offering "snow guarantee" often invite skiers from other French resorts when their pistes are all-a-melting.
Flaine is the France’s fourth biggest ski area with 72 lifts (6 gondolas, 28 chairlifts, 38 draglifts) reaching the more traditional villages of Morillon, Samoens and Les Carroz. A piste also takes you down to the lovely village of Sixt. It all creates a vast region totaling 265km of pistes (15 green, 52 blue, 52 red and 14 black). Classic runs include Gers (Black); le Diamant Noir (black); Serpentine (red) and L'Aujon (red). Most of the skiing is in a wide snow bowl, where all pistes lead back to the village.
The centre is car-free, with restaurants, cafes and bars around two central shopping plazas. All activities are in the resort center or either close and easily accessible. There is also a cultural centre where jazz and classical music events are scheduled, a library and art gallery.
The three levels Flaine-Forum, Flaine-Foret and Flaine-Front de Neige, are connected by elevators and pedestrian trails. Two enclosed lifts operate day and night between the higher point Flaine Foret and Flaine Forum –and lower villages. The separate Hameau de Flaine, an charming region of Scandinavian style chalets, is served by a free bus to Flaine Forum, which runs every 15 to 30 minutes until midnight, where most of the shops and restaurants and the ski schools meeting-place are located. Although good for skiing, nightlife is quite limited and the resort suffers from a lack of real charm.
The hot snowpark for snowboarders is named Jam Park. There are excellent nursery slopes close to the resort several and excellent ski and snowboarding schools available for beginners. Every week on Sunday at the Jam Park there is a snow DJ’s party with a barbeque, worth a visit during the ski holiday.
