Vars’ other name is “The white forest” and it completely matches the resort. A wonderful, peaceful and quiet place among old grown forests and exquisite nature. Vars is more like a collective resort – it consists of four villages – Saint Marcellin (the oldest one), Sainte Marie (the richest in ski-lifts and ski-facilities), Sainte Catherine (an example of pastoral life) and Les Claux (the middle of the resort with all the modern facilities). There are 5 ski stations in the resort. The largest settlement is Les Claus with nearly 300 inhabitants, and the smallest- Saint Marcellin with 89. Vars is a good choice, because it combines in an unique way traditions, authenticity and modernity. It boasts with lovely sunshine, characteristic of all French south. The snow is of good quality and the infrastructure is designed so that the visitors feel as comfortable as possible. The whole place has original and wonderful spirit and atmosphere.

The sunny exposure and mild climate has enabled to build the ski resort at high altitude since the ensemble of the district’s villages culminate at over 1500 m, and the ski runs – 2750 m. First and most importantly mountainous, the Vars resort consists of different territories with interesting and unique features which attract the attention with a high density of natural and protected space. In Vars you can observe a nice combination of skiing and nature protection – the reserve of the Escreins valley and the Parc Régional du Queyras are the main proofs that nature is preserved in thi ski resort.

The natural way of living in Vars enables to protect its cultural, culinary and ethnographic traditions and the Varsinc temperament shows the crossroads of the mountain and Mediterranean influences. The mountain dialect there takes a Provençal accent, which makes the place even more exotic. Vars is a region where the quality life is one of the major virtues which attracts more and more people. The characteristic smile on the faces of the local inhabitants, the joy of holiday makers and the warm welcome which is reserved for them turn Vars into a desirable destination and a place of fun.

Vars and its surroundings is the paradise for numerous mountain sports. The nature and landscape there are favourable to the practise of multiple open air activities, athletic or discovery (apart from skiing and the conventional winter sports). Skiing is, of course, the most popular winter sport. However, hiking and mountain biking in the summer are also part of the district's sports range. The biggest sports events that have taken place in Vars are: in 1999, the Extreme Games Mad Masters, in 2001 – the world championship in mountain biking, descent and dual slalom and in 2003 – the Belgian ski championship.
