General info
Cauterets represents a charming ski resort and an attractive spa destination with position at the department of Hautes-Pyrenees. The town lies in the scenic valley of Gave de Cauteretsand that takes part of the Pyrenees National park. This is an excellent place combining recreation, spa and wonderful opportunities for winter and summer sport activities. Both skiers and hikers choose Cauterets for their holiday, determined to explore the well-maintained pistes and walking routes. Even if you are not keen on sports,
the panorama will enchant you with the surrounding summits of Monn (2 723 m), Pic de Chabarrou (2 910 m), Cabaliros (2 333m) and Vignemale (3 298m).
Winter activities
As soon as the snow covers the slopes of the Pyrenees, its glamour under the sun attracts skiers to hit the pistes and enjoy their favourite hobby. Downhill skiing is possible on the 25 runs with various descends and level of difficulty, set at an altitude between 1300m and 2500m. Pistes are adapted mostly for beginners and intermediates, providing very convenient transfer with the cable cars and lifts. Fans of cross-country skiing will also find a base to exercise their sport and choose among the 36km of tracks at Pont d’Espagne. Just enough to be a medium experienced skier and the ski area above the town is yours. It is recommended to come during the week, since weekends are very busy and crowds can build up some queues.
Summer activities
In summer Cauterets is flooded by hikers eager to discover more and more of the marvelous peaks and reach up the highest one (Vignemale -10,820 ft.). Take the cable car and the stunning view of the Cirque de Lys and the whole mountain of Pyrenees will reveal before you. An excursion to the spectacular lake Gaube will not take you long from the town, but you can go there also by the chairlift from the Pont d’Espagne. It is possible that experienced hikers stop by in this area on their trip from coast to coast of the GR10 walking route. The thermal springs are another feature of the resort that makes travellers mad on wellness and spa. The hot water contains sulphur and soda, which are beneficial components for treating diseases such as rheumatism, respiratory disorders and other physical problems.
