Montgenevre introduction
One of the most accessible of the French Ski Resorts is Montgenevre. Its altitude is 1860 m, and it is located just 2 km from the Italian border. Not only is it accessible, but it also gives a link to the enormous ski-system called the Milky Way, which includes hundreds of kilometers of various ski runs. The actual resort consists of two villages – Montgenevre and Alberts.
The snow is always great, as the professionals say “the resort has a good snow record” and accessibility is nearly ski-to-your-door. During the week there are no queues. Their presence at weekends only shows how popular and quality the resort is. The other factor for the sometimes crowded resort during the weekend, as we mentioned its easy access from both France and Italy. The resort is more oriented for the beginners and intermediate-skiers. If you want more challenging ski-runs, then head to Italy. Montgenevre is a fair budget venue. There are no frills, but the snow is great and the peace and quiet will make you relax from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
If you are a snowboarder, then Montgenevre has what to offer you - there is a well-kept snow-park, including two open bowls in the Milky Way, and some wonderful free-riding terrain. The centre of the village is not very big but it has its spirit. Nearly all of the accommodation is equally close to the centre and the ski runs. The forest surrounds the village in a picturesque way, so that when it is snow covered it looks like in a fairytale – romantic and secluded.
Montgenevre boasts to be a family resort – it offers babysitting and child care services as well as activities for children. Apres-ski is well-organized, with a nice range of restaurants, which offer traditional meals and delicacies as well as international dishes. The resort features a few discos and bars. It is not as busily entertained as some of the big French resorts, yet there is certainly enough places for you to have fun. According to people who go there on regular basis, the best restaurant in town is Le Jamy opposite the Tourist Office, but it is a little bit expensive. A good choice for apre-ski is Le Graal, which offers live music 3 times a week and Karaoke night. For a more ambient atmosphere and cool music go to Les Rois Mages, or to Les Anglais or the Chaburton for a game of pool. For the night life lovers the best place is ‘The Blue Night’, a disco made in the spirit of the 70s - thick vinyl seats, blue glitter walls, dodgy lighting and mirrors everywhere. There you can have fun until 5 am.
