La Foux d`Allos introduction
General Information
La Foux d’Allos is located in the French Alps and is the upper resort of the Village Allos. The resort was founded in 1937 and is built all in wood. La Foux d’Allos is 9 kilometers or 5.6 miles north of Allos and 7 kilometers or 4.3 miles south of Allos pass. Allos pass is closed November through May due to snow. The resort is on the border of the Mercanteur National Park. And the nearest airport is two hours away and at Nice. There are 21 ski lifts and 5 slopes to ski. La Foux d’Allos hosts a number of shops and a supermarket. Parasailing is staged all year long.
Winter Activities
There are ski runs for all levels of experience in skiing but most of the pistes are for downhill and for intermediate skilled skiers. The highest lift takes people up to an elevation of 2,600 meters or about 8,500 feet. The slopes are very good for snowboarding. At the higher elevations, skiing and snowboarding can be done all year long. There are instructors for those who want lessons in skiing and snowboarding. There is some cross country skiing as well as snowshoeing. Also, there is an ice rink and a toboggan run, for those who are interested in ice skating and tobogganing. There is a well maintained ice driving track for people who want to practice driving on ice.
Summer Activities
There are hundreds of miles of trails with viewpoints of Mont Pelat and so hiking is quite popular during the summer months. Cycling and mountain biking are quite a rave as well. White water fishing is allowed even without a permit. Along with an archery range, there are tennis and basketball courts to have some outdoor fun. Hikers can follow a trail up to Mont Pelat at an elevation of 3,050 meters or 10,000 feet. The Allos Festival takes place in August and a mountain bike meet takes place soon after. There is also a man-made lake that hosts many water sports like canoeing, pedal boating, and water sliding. There is also an adventure park with zip lines and rope bridges for all levels of ability. The ski lifts are available during the summer for mountain bikers and hikers.
Other Information
La Foux d’Allos has a vast campground that is a converted mountain farm, which calls in for lots of campers. There are several hotels, bed and breakfasts, and furnished rentals for the overnight stays. One of the major tourist attractions is a huge chess board. Mercanteur National Park was established in 1979 and the largest high altitude lake in Europe – the Lac d’Allos - is found within its borders. The flora can range from olive trees to alpine flowers and there are over 24,000 plant species, some very rare.
