Tignes, France guide

Tignes introduction

Tignes is one of the French most snow-sure and popular resorts. It remains opened for skiing 10 months in the year and is an obligatory summer destination for national ski teams in training – and for all those who can't wait for the winter season. The glacier is opened 365 days per year, but the damage from global warming and a falling interest in summer skiing, has caused the resort to have a rest from mid-May until mid-June and again from September until October. During the summer months 13 lifts serve 20km of high-altitude pistes with a vertical drop of 750m. Tignes is situated few kms above Val d'Isere, 30 km from Bourg St Maurice and not so far from Chambery. Tignes enjoys the skiing infrastructure of Val d'Isere, as they together compose the L'Espace Killy, which is one of the largest ski areas in the world The 300km of marked pistes cover all abilities and provide varied mountain terrain. Advanced skiers and boarders are well served, with great off-piste, but they need a guide, of course. Tignes is a ski-in ski-out resort, and everything is dedicated to the sport. Skiers and boarders are spoilt for choice with nine slalom stadiums, two mogul stadiums and two snow parks. The whole region is serviced very well by an efficient lift system accessing the Grande Motte and Val-d'Isère, and the five 'satellites' are all linked by free bus. Beginners have nursery slopes and some nice easy runs in L'Espace Killy, while intermediates have their well-groomed reds runs, but be warned that some of the piste grading is inaccurate and some greens are more like tough reds. The Aiguille Percée downhill course is very popular in this area, but avalanches are often seen; other well-known runs are The S, The Wall and the Double M. For experts who like the challenge of moguls there are some excellent runs at Tovière. Ski runs: green 22, blue 69, red 34, and 15 black.

Families are really welcomed with good childcare run by the ski schools. Tignes is not a place that relies on the Alpine ambience. But, who cares when the skiing is the most important now? Tignes is one of the most popular destinations for both British and French.

There are 72 restaurants, 57 bars, 4 discos, and one cinema. Internet cafe in Val Claret; multimedia space in Le Lac; sports centre with tennis, squash, gym, sauna and massage.
