The first time when Tour de France finished a stage in Alpe d’Huez was in 1952.

The climb towards Alpe d'Huez is 14 km at an average gradient of 8% with 21 hairpin bends signed with panels honouring the winners of each stage that has finished there. Having finished there for the 22nd time in 2001, the organizers started again at the bottom with a double sign-post for Fausto Coppi and Lance Armstrong.

Alpe d'Huez is also poluar with the name the "Dutch Mountain", because a Dutchman having won there 8 of the first 14 finishes of Tour de France. The peak also serves as the finish of La Marmotte - a one-day, 175km cyclosportive ride with well over 5000m of climbing.
